A Duane Reade store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn is recognizing and trying to capitalize on the fierce identity and local needs of their young hipster community by offering them a Beer Bar! Yes, that is correct! A Growler Bar reminiscent of a glamorized New York City subway station named “Brew York City”. Growlers are refillable glass bottles that were popular in the 19th century as a way to carry draft beer home or to work. There has actually been a resurgence of these growlers as Whole Foods and some local bars have begun to offer them too. “Brew York City” walls are lined with growlers, Fire Island Lighthouse Ale and other local beers on tap. Behind the bar, a large walk-in refrigerator stocks common national brands as well as local, craft and imported beers. I wonder what other Duane Reade’s will start providing their community with….. maybe, gourmet cupcakes?!
