@ RSPop Shop in Manhattan!

Here’s your chance to try a Brooklyn Cupcake and shop for a great cause!

KTCollection, an upcoming hand-made jewelry collection, adored by many celebrities (e.g.: Drew Barrymore, Amy Adams, Tori Spelling), is hosting this fabulous event to help support the Lupus Alliance of America (Long Island & Queens Affiliate). 10% of the proceeds will benefit this non-profit organization.

Lupus is a chronic disorder of the immune system that causes inflammation of various parts of the body. For most people, Lupus is mild, affecting only a few body organs: for others, it may cause serious and life threatening problems. The body’s immune system normally makes proteins called antibodies to protect the body against viruses, bacteria and other foreign materials.  These foreign materials are called antigens. In an immune disorder such as Lupus, the immune system loses the ability to tell the difference between foreign substances (antigens) and its own cells and tissues. The immune system then makes antibodies directed against “self”. These antibodies called auto-antibodies, react with the “self” antigen to form immune complexes. The immune complexes build up in the tissues and can cause inflammation, injury to tissues and pain.

The Lupus Alliance of America serves to support those individuals, organizations and agencies that are involved in research to find a cure for lupus or to improve treatment of the disease. This support includes providing money for such research and the dissemination of information that will help to advance those efforts. Their “Let Kids be Kids” program is available to children 7-17 who have Lupus or a family member with Lupus. Day trips to fun places are planned, transportation included. Scholarships are also available to children afflicted with Lupus who have special needs that cannot be covered by other means. We also offer college scholarships, trips to “Camp Sunshine” in Maine, information on school 504 plans, SSI and Medicaid and more.
