Brooklyn Cupcake is proud to support the Friends of Firefighter’s organization again at their 2011 Fall Fundraiser.

Thousands of active and retired firefighters responded to the alarm and 343 members of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) perished in the collapse of the World Trade Center towers on September 11, 2001. Friends of Firefighters (FoF) was born within days of this catastrophic event through the performance of several unobtrusive acts of kindness offered by the local community. These ranged from making dinners for exhausted rescue workers, to coordinating and facilitating “behind the scenes” in a variety of ways for funerals and memorials, to sitting and listening to firefighters talk over a cup of coffee. Because of our discreet approach, FoF has proven to be a responsive channel to the deeper needs of the firefighting community, as many firefighters reach out to our staff for assistance in finding mental health or other needed resources.

Friends of Firefighters has grown from a small group of volunteers dropping by firehouses to offer relief, to an established and respected organization developing strategies to serve the New York City firefighting community.

Friends of Firefighters is dedicated to addressing the physical, mental health, and wellness needs of New York City’s firefighters and their families. Our ongoing mission is to provide long-term support and services through confidential counseling, wellness services, and other assistance required by firefighters and their families.

Inspiring Poem dedicated to the FDNY

So as you look at the firefighter with his rake, hose or axe,
His beet red face or ice covered mustache,
You should know why he goes through that smoky front door,
And is forced to crawl like a baby down on the floor.
He does it to save both lives and property,
All that is precious to you and to me.
So take a good look at this modern warrior who serves his call proud and true,
And know that he would die just to save me and you.
